Springtime is the perfect time to get outside and explore the world around us. Unfortunately, the rain sometimes gets in the way of outdoor adventures. At Growing Kids Learning Center, we understand that rainy days can really put a damper on your little one’s day, but there is still plenty of fun to be had inside! We have more than 28 years of experience getting preschoolers excited about indoor activities when the Northern Illinois weather is less than cooperative and to help parents and educators out, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite rainy-day activities that are perfect for preschoolers. Read on to learn more ways to keep those kiddos’ minds active and engaged during a rainy day.
Story Time
Gather around a cozy blanket and read a few of your child’s favorite stories. They’ll love hearing the same stories again and again, and it’s a great opportunity for them to learn about different characters, settings, and how stories are structured.
Arts and Crafts
Get creative with a variety of craft activities! Use construction paper, glue, markers, and other supplies to create fun and unique art pieces. If you’re feeling adventurous, try making your own playdough or creating a paper mache project.
Puppets
Create your own puppets and put on a play. Have your child come up with all the characters and their stories. You can even use household items like socks and paper cups to make your own puppets!
Indoor Scavenger Hunt
Hide simple items around the house and create a list of items for your child to find. It’s a great way to keep them active while they search and they’ll love the surprise of finding something new.
Music Time
Put on your child’s favorite tunes and encourage them to dance, sing, and make up their own songs. It’s a great way for them to express their creativity and have fun at the same time!
Create a Fort
Gather some pillows and blankets to create a cozy fort. It’s a great place for your child to curl up with their favorite stuffed animals and books or even watch a movie!
Bake Something
Get in the kitchen and whip up a tasty treat! Your child will love helping out and it’s a great opportunity for them to learn about measuring ingredients and following directions.
Puzzles
Puzzles are a great way to keep your child engaged and help them practice problem-solving skills. Choose a puzzle with the right level of difficulty for your child and have fun putting it together.
Gardening
Plant some seeds indoors and watch them grow! Have your child help water the plants and watch as they grow. It’s a great way to teach them about the life cycle of plants and how to care for them.
Play Dress-Up
Dig out some old clothes and costumes and let your child explore and create their own outfits. It’s a great way to help them use their imagination and have some fun!
